The Center for Green Studies is proud to announce our membership in the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce. What better way to take the pulse of the community's environmental health awareness.
I interviewed Judy Hull, Executive Director of the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce. I wanted to know specifically what the chamber is doing with their business activities that contribute to the local green effort. Ms. Hull was excited to tell me about their contributions. They are strict recyclers for all office supplies as well as beverage bottles.
During their two main yearly events, Island Fest on the second weekend in April and Holiday Fest on the first weekend in December, the chamber pays someone to stand at the exit and make sure people are directed to the proper recycle bin to dispose of their garbage.
I thought it admirable that they would have the foresight and concern for our environment. Hull says, "It's all about education." We at CGS agree with her. It is all about education.
I also asked Judy about other members of the chamber who are outstanding with regard to the welfare of our environment. She responded enthusiastically mentioning Ruth Schrader-Grace. Ruth is encouraging our local restaurants and vendors to use environmentally friendly products, such as organic based cups made with corn based material. This material is not recyclable but compostable! Judy used these cups at her two Chamber of Commerce events mentioned above.
It is the presence of conscientious organizations such as the Islamorada Chamber of Commerce that creates awareness and inspires a sense of urgency to protect our planet from harmful products such as Styrofoam and plastics.
