Green Science at Key West High School
Here in the Florida Keys, at Key West High School students, along with the help of their dedicated and resourceful physics teacher, Josh Clearman, have founded the Key West High School Alternative Energy Center.

The heart felt efforts of these dedicated students are focused on developing energy conservation strategies and reducing carbon evidence here in the Florida Keys. It is an example to follow.

Bio-fuel development
One of several projects is a biodiesel automobile. Converted from a standard diesel fuel operating engine the biodiesel car runs on a ordinary vegetable oil. This idea was very interested as we have many such engines here in the Keys.

The Key West Bio Lab, houses five different experiments in; biodiesel, the "ice bear," project which reduces the work load on a standard wall unit air conditioner during peak usage times, two students painting the large doors of the Lab with light colors to help keep in the cool air.
"Their hard work is to help reduce the energy our building uses. By painting these doors light colors, we can own some control over the natural heat-flow of the room,
and use that to our advantage," says Savanna Booth, blog writer for Key West High School Alternative Energy Center.

Their other goals for the year include converting a golf cart to solar power.

As these young people graduate and become adult members of our communitee we look forward to thier concern, knowledge and sense of mission helping the Florda Keys to be a greener place to live.
